On Thursday, May 23, youth leaders from the city-spanning Bright Promises Youth Council will share their experiences of trauma and healing through poetry, photographs, personal essays, and more. '

WHY RECOGNIZE TRAUMA?

Recognizing trauma is vital for understanding emotions and experiences within yourself and others. By acknowledging the presence and ultimately, impact of trauma, we build a foundation of empathy, resilience, and healing that creates a supportive space to feel safe and seen.

It’s important to remember that ignoring or avoiding symptoms of trauma isn’t a healthy coping response. In fact, avoiding them can make things worse.”

WHAT TRAUMA can look LIKE

Understanding the signs and symptoms of trauma can help in recognizing when friends or family may need support. Watch for these signals within yourself and others to identify possible signs of trauma.

Changes in Behavior

Sudden shifts in behavior, such as increased aggression, withdrawal, or outbursts of anger, can be signals of emotional distress.

Sleep Issues

Difficulty falling asleep, frequent nightmares, or disrupted sleep patterns.

Academic Challenges

Trouble concentrating, declining grades, or a lack of interest in school activities that were once enjoyable.

Physical Complaints

Recurring headaches, stomachaches, or other unexplained physical symptoms not tied to a medical condition.

Being aware of these signs can create a compassionate environment where  people feel safe to share and seek help. Recognizing these signals early is the first step toward healing and building a stronger, more resilient future.

acknowledge: Take the opportunity to understand how racism affects your life and community. Learn how institutional, systemic, and interpersonal racism impact you across different aspects of your world.

affirm feelings: Give yourself time and support to process your feelings and know that your experiences and emotions are valid. Collective healing can be powerful.

become empowered: Self-advocacy and activism are powerful ways to heal. Seek out brave, trauma-informed spaces that encourage you to recognize your worth and take action to overcome challenges and drive positive change.
